I understand that most of Utah was under clouds and it was hard to see the eclipse that a lone get a picture of it.

looking for a digital camera? here are a few hints I hope will be helpful.

what are you going to use it for? If you just want to record family and friends, then an inexpensive point and shoot camera is something you may want to look for, these can be found around $100 to $300 dollars. It depends on the bells and whistles you want. most people use the camera on their smartphone. these are getting better all the time, however, I still like a real camera. If you want to make photography your profession plan on spending more on a good camera. These usually cost $500 to several thousand dollars.

Some features that may help you take better photos.
Megapixels, this determines how sharp you pictures will be as well as the size of prints you will be able to make. 8 to 16 megapixels are a good place to start. This also depends on the size of the image sensor in the camera. Remember the more the megapixels the higher the price.

lenses, this controls the amount of light and focuses the image on the sensor. Again the difference between a fixed lens camera and a SLR (one with multiple lenses) is personal or professional use. For the average photographer a fixed lens camera works well. Some cameras come with what is called a "mega-zoom" lens. these can range from 24mm to 1000+mm. Again depending on what you use the camera for helps determine what lens you may want. As with the megapixels the size of he lens determines the price.
image stabilization this helps  reduce blur from hand shake reducing blur, especially when using telephoto lenses.

Camera accessories Many cameras come with software to help download you photos to you computer. Most have a beginner's version of a image editing software. These work well, but, as you get into Photography, you may want to up grade your image editing software, again, don't pay more than you need. More on this later. Most cameras come with a neck or wrist strap and a lens cap. these are useful in helping keeping the lens from getting scratched or dropping your camera. A camera bag is great for keeping your camera and accessories all in one place.
Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I will try to update new information that will help with your photography needs. If there is a question that hasn't been covered in the class or that you may have thought of after class please feel free to ask it here,  I will address it here and if it would benefit the rest  of the class I can address at our next meeting.
